Eric Price, a vice principal at a Utah middle school, didn’t know his CPR training would come in handy so soon.

Ten days after taking a CPR refresher course, Price saved the life of student Skyler Nelson using the technique. The 14-year-old collapsed during gym class at West Jordan Middle School.

“I rolled him over; he was gasping for air. His eyes were in the top of his head,” physical education teacher Alan Nakagama told KUTV.

The school’s principal, Dixie Garrison, ran over as someone called 911. While waiting for paramedics, Price stepped in and started administering CPR along with some help from School Resource Officer David Hood. It spared the teen’s life, just like the time a cop saved an 84-year-old during a routine traffic stop by performing CPR as he suffered a heart attack.

“At the time, the adrenaline kicks in, and you just do what you’re trained to do,” Price said.

Nelson was taken to the hospital where doctors discovered he suffers from a genetic heart defect. He had to undergo surgery to implant a defibrillator in his body.

“I feel fortunate and I feel like I get a second chance,” the teenager said, later adding, “I’d like to say thank you very much and I’m grateful.”
