Few things in life are more gratifying than coming home to a dog who’s been waiting all day to see you.

But with that fluffy bundle of joy comes a whole lot of responsibility. Grooming your dog properly and monitoring their health is an essential part of being a dog owner. That responsibility should not be taken lightly.
YouTuber CarebDude knows all about the grooming that’s required with a large, heavily shedding dog. CarebDude is the owner of a Samoyed, a breed that flaunts a thick, double coat of fur. Samoyeds originated in the Russian town of Oymyakon, where winter temperatures dip to minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit, according to theAmerican Kennel Club. Thus, the Samoyed’s hefty coat was an absolute necessity.
In January of 2014, CarebDude uploaded a video of him and his dog, Sam, sitting down for a brushing. Since it was uploaded, the video has been viewed close to 4 million times — and for good reason. The two-minute-long clip is actually an hourlong time-lapse that’s sped up significantly. Little by little, as CarebDude thoroughly brushes his Samoyed, a pile of fur begins to collect. By the end of the process, Sam doesn’t look much different — but the giant mound of fur next to him tells us that this grooming session was much needed.
In an equally intriguing sequel to “Brushing my Samoyed Sam Part 1,” CarebDude mentions in a comment that he meticulously brushes his dog once a month. Luckily for the owner, Sam is very calm during the whole ordeal — an impressive feat for a typically very active dog. You can imagine how much of a pain it would be if Sam couldn’t sit still.
The American Kennel Club says that the grooming experience can be a good way tobolster your relationship with your furry friend. Not only that, but grooming your dog at home is a cheaper alternative to a professional service. Based off a report fromAngie’s List, the cost of a professional grooming service for your pet will range from $30 to $90, depending on their size and the extent of the service. You can see how this would add up over time, especially with dogs who require more frequent maintenance.
The fact of the matter is, most grooming can be done at home — think brushing, nail clipping, teeth cleaning, and bathing. It’s admittedly a bit more work to brush and groom a large dog than it is a small one, but it’s not an infeasible task. You just need the proper tools, an open area and a bit of patience — because it won’t always go as smoothly as it did with Sam and his owner.
We can’t overstate the importance of monitoring your dog’s health and ensuring that they’re groomed properly and regularly. Big or small, young or old, all dogs deserve the utmost love, care and attention.
Below, you can see Sam sit down for his monthly brushing. You may just not believe your eyes.
