An Imgur user recently shared his bittersweet discovery online, and it’s a powerful tale of love and loss.
A beloved husband and father passed away in February 2016 at the age of 51 from a ruptured artery. His wife had gotten into metal engraving and needed a space on which to work. Being the skilled carpenter he was, her husband happily built a workbench just for her.
In the months following his untimely death, their grieving son noticed that one of the legs on the workbench broke, so he took the legs off to reinforce and secure them with bolts. It was a technique his father taught him.
When he flipped over the workbench, he noticed something scribbled on the underside of the bench — two paragraphs handwritten in a red marker. Had he not taken Mom’s bench apart, who knows when it would have been discovered.
But there it was, and when this heartbroken son realized read the words, he was blown away…
A family was heartbroken when a loving husband and father named Mason passed away in February 2016.
“My dad passed away on February 26th at the age of 51 from a ruptured artery,” his son wrote on Imgur. “He made this workbench for my mom, Becca, when she got into metal engraving.”
“He was technically my step dad, but being as how I’ve never met my biological father, he was the only and best father I had,” the Imgur user says.
Mason taught his son everything he knew about carpentry, so he knew exactly how to fix the broken workbench for his mom. That’s when he removed the legs, flipped it over and noticed a handwritten inscription underneath the top of the bench.
It was a secret note from his father to his mother. He had written it before he passed away, but it’s unclear when.
The inscription reads:
I love you Becca.
Whatever day this is, I hope it’s a good one. God truly answered my prayers the day he gave me you. I know that these days are the best I’ll ever have, and I’m glad you’re in them.
I’m not sure if you’ll ever see this, but if you do, just know that I love you very much. If there is one thing want in life, it is to be as good to you as you are to me. If I can do that, I’ll be the happiest man alive.
I love you beautiful wife.

After finding his dad’s secret message, he showed it to his mom. She was, of course, touched to tears. So was the entire family. The discovery was emotional and bittersweet.
In an effort to preserve the inscription, Mason’s son removed the two planks from the center and mounted them in a frame.
This man’s story is now going viral, inspiring other people to share their own heartwarming stories of unexpected discoveries in the face of loss.
Mason’s son says the family is holding up in the wake of his father’s passing, and that they’re lucky to have their faith to guide them.
It seems Mason’s note fits perfectly in line with the relationship he shared with Becca.
Their son says, “I have never seen two people so much in love.”
