It Might Not Seem Like Much But Simply Replacing Tiny In-Home Screw Could Save Your Life

Years ago, Mariana Harrison got a great piece of advice from her dad about home security, and it has stayed with her ever since. Now she wants to share that same advice with the world.

Harrison is a real estate agent in Texas. One of the first pieces of advice she gives to new homeowners is the same advice her dad gave her so many years ago when she got her first apartment, and now she is going to share it with all of us.

Many years ago, just as Mariana Harrison was getting her first apartment, her dad stopped by one day with his tool box. He asked to look at the locks on her front door, and when he saw them, he knew right away that they were useless in stopping a determined intruder.

He pulled out the screws that came standard with the locks, and they were only a half an inch long. He quickly and easily switched them out with four inch long screws that would be sure to stop anyone from kicking his daughter’s door in.

Recently, Mariana shared this story on her Facebook page, saying:

“My dad gave me this advice a long time ago when I moved into my first apartment. He even came out and changed the screws for me as soon as I moved in. Someone else recently posted about it and I thought I would share! A good home security tip that you may have never thought about. Most contractors install the plates with the supplied screws which are only a half inch long and come out with one kick by a burglar. He installed 4 inch screws in their place that go through the door frame and into the framing of the house. They can kick for a long time before they get tired! You can see in the picture the screw in his hand is the screw supplied with the door hardware. Making a burglar make a bunch of noise and be foiled in their initial plan can not only give you time to arm yourself but they will most likely move on to an easier target.”- Mariana Harrison

Of the many thousands of people who read her post, many were moved to comment, saying things like:

“Wow that is amazing!! Such an easy thing to do and never thought of that. Going to change mine out this weekend. Thanks”- Stacey Politi Buettner

“this really works, has some one try to kick in our door at 3am one night, they kicked it seriously hard 3 times and the door didn’t budge at all, then they ran off. we had just installed a key pad door knob and used deck screws like this, I was impressed and totally had to eat my words cuz I laughed at my hubby for his “overkill” door installation. that overkill may have saved us.”- Patti Bergevin

“Great idea I did that in my old house. It really works. Also we drilled a hole through the wood on the side of the window into the window frame and stuck a long nail into the hole so the window could not be lifted unless the pin was removed from inside the house. It worked because some tried to break into my living room and they could not get in.”- Carol Whitzel
