A picture of a teenager assisting an elderly woman down an escalator in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has gone viral.

Leah Kerr was shopping at Glenbrook Square Mall with her two young kids and grandmother when she stepped off the escalator to enter the food court. She immediately noticed her grandma was not with the rest of the family.

The elderly woman was stuck at the top of the escalator, too afraid to go down, reports WXIN. She feared losing her balance and falling down the moving staircase.

“I didn’t realize until I stepped on that grandma was too scared to get on. I felt horrible as I watched her try again and again to get her footing right. People walked around her, pushed by her or asked her to step to the side,” Kerr wrote.

Kerr’s hands were tied with the kids and she could not help her grandma get down the escalator.

That’s when the mom says she saw a surprising scene unfold. A teen behind her grandmother was helping the elderly woman ride down the escalator.

Kerr was so stunned by the incident that she made a Facebook post about it with an image of the assisting teen.

The mom writes:

Grandma went with me shopping tonight in Ft Wayne, Just me, her and the two little ones. I was carrying all of the bags and trying to hold both girls hands as we went down the escalator. I didn’t realize until I stepped on that grandma was too scared to get on-I felt horrible as I watched her try again and again to get her footing right. People walked around her, pushed by her or asked her to step to the side- until this amazing man saw her. Not only was he not ashamed to help her, but held her hand the entire way down and helped her off. Thank you so so much to him.
