Sarah Dawn McKinley’s husband died of cancer less than a week before two men broke into her home, where she was caring for her 3-month-old son.
The Oklahoma woman was outnumbered, but not outgunned according to a CNN report. But she still wanted to make sure it was OK to defend herself. So remarkably, McKinley called 911 to confirm it was legal to fire at the two men who were attempting to rob her in 2011.
A 911 recording reveals McKinley asking a dispatcher, “I’ve got two guns in my hand. Is it OK to shoot him if he comes in this door?”
The dispatcher, Diane Graham, told the 18-year-old mother that she should do whatever it took to defend herself and her son, according to a report from ABC News.
McKinley took Graham at her word, and unloaded a 12-gauge shotgun blast into Justin Shane Martin, armed with a knife, when he entered the room. He died at the scene. “You have to make a choice, you or him,” McKinley told CNN. “I chose my son over him.”
McKinley’s husband passed away on Christmas Day of cancer, according to CNN. Martin’s accomplice, Dustin Louis Stewart, turned himself in to the police after fleeing the scene, frightened, but alive, according to ABC. The two would-be robbers were likely looking for painkillers, according to ABC News.
