A police officer in Dearborn, MI, received praise nationwide after he was photographed lending a helping hand to a man begging for food.

Officer Raed Essa reportedly saw the man outside Capri Italian Bakery and offered to buy him some food. The moment, reminiscent to the time an officer bought a homeless teen shoes, took one bakery customer by surprise.

Rees Williams shared a photo of the officer on his Facebook page and explained what he had witnessed that day. The photo was shared more than 8,000 times.

“You could absolutely tell that this officer wanted nothing but the best for this gentleman,” he wrote. “I wanted to share this due to the amount of negativity towards police these days. These officers put their lives at risk everyday to protect us. I wish nothing but the best for this officer as I witnessed something truly amazing today at lunch that you don’t see very often.”

Yet, according to the Dearborn police chief, Essa’s random act of kindness shouldn’t astonish people.

“Once I learned which officer it was, I wasn’t surprised,” Ron Haddad told WXYZ-TV Detroit. “He’s a top-notch guy and he goes the extra mile on everything he does.”
