There’s a lot we don’t know about our oceans, but we’re certainly learning. A fair amount of our understanding of the oceanic ecosystem has been make through advancements in science that have provided us with windows into never before seen aspects of life underwater. Even drones have captured rare footage of various scenes just below the surface of the water.

One such example is going viral this week after Eric Sterman captured rare footage of breaching whales and a new calf swimming along the water’s surface off the North Shore of Oʻahu, HI. “Filmed these beautiful creatures last year with my Dronefly from land,” he writes in the video’s description. “Was planning on surfing when I saw them passing by really close to shore, so I grabbed my drone and sent it out to capture this amazing moment of the baby calf hugging the mother.” The footage (taken from the shore) is crisp and the water clear, allowing for a clear view of this intimate moment between these incredible animals.

This reminded us of another drone footage video we shared recently from Kurt Roll. While sailing off the coast of San Diego, he caught unbelievable footage of a pod of 50 dolphins bow-riding the front of his boat — an equally impressive video that’s certainly worth a watch.
