If you’ve ever seen a sand dollar up-close, you might find it hard to argue that there is something mesmerizing about them. They have a texture of their very own and a look that screams, “I just came from the beach!”
Whether a child finds one after embarking on a hunt to collect one or two or if you stumble across one by chance, the sight of them will surely amaze you. As fun as they are, did you look close enough to find what this woman found?
After grabbing a sand dollar at the beach, this woman had a startling realization. It was unlike any she had seen before.
This one she has in her hand was alive! Chances are, if you’re like this woman, most sand dollars you have found before were deceased. In fact, some people have no idea that sand dollars actually are living creatures.
Sand dollars are a species of flattened, burrowing sea urchins. The ones that aren’t quite as flat are known as sea biscuits. Relatives include sea urchins, sea cucumbers and starfish.
It is more common to see them after they already have perished, yet if you are lucky enough to find one like this woman did, you will notice some really amazing differences. When she points out what those differences are, it will be easier to recognize whether the ones you have seen were alive or not.
Either way, don’t be alarmed. Living sand dollars are completely harmless. Once you see her experience with a living sand dollar, it might be difficult not to keep your eyes peeled for one next time you find yourself on the beach. Watch how much fun she has
